Challenging Work
An HVACR service technician provides emergency repairs and general maintenance to a building’s heating, ventilation, air conditioning and/or refrigeration system (typically called a mechanical system in the industry). Technicians are employed by mechanical service contractors who sell their repair and maintenance services to building owners and managers.
Hands-on and High-tech Skills Needed
To be an HVACR service technician, you’ll need to be able to skillfully work with your hands and think through challenging problems to arrive at the right solution. You’ll also have to be proficient with using a computer and other high-tech electronic devices. What's more, you'll have to interact with customers, be mindful of safety and have a desire to continually learn new skills.
Diverse, interesting work sites
HVACR service technicians work in some of the most interesting and important places to ensure the occupants of those buildings are comfortable and safe. Increasingly, HVACR technicians play a critical role in maintaining clean air within a building and in making buildings more energy efficient. You may find yourself helping to ensure the indoor environment of a hospital is clean or making sure the heat is running at the local elementary school. The fact is, HVACR technicians play an increasingly important role in the health and wellness of today’s building occupants.
